Pinot Grigio DOC 2023...

Pinot Grigio Vigna Castel Ringberg 2023
Alto Adige DOC
Named for the Renaissance castle built there by Habsburgs
in 1620 and rising up from Lake Caldaro in alternating
moderate and steep slopes, the Vigna Castel Ringberg is a
crown jewel of the region and a monopole for Elena Walch,
from where many of her award-winning, mineral-driven
wines emanate. The term Vigna is an additional denomi-
nation of origin, recognizing a precisely demarcated and
cartographically recorded single vineyard. In addition to
variable altitudes from 330 to 400 meters above sea level,
Vigna Castel Ringberg also boasts a multiplicity of soils.
The higher perches, climbing into the Mendel ridge of the Dolomites, are of 30,000 year old glacial Adige
River gravel, while calcareous soils with morainic substrata join loose limestone in gentler lower zones. The
moderating influence of the lake and the strong afternoon drying southerly wind known as Ora also
contribute to the balanced, elegant character of the wines, from a host of native and international varieties.
A clear straw yellow characterizes the Pinot Grigio Vigna Castel Ringberg. A complex variety of fruits,
especially ripe pears and lime blossom, as well as spicy sage notes inform the bouquet. Structure and elegance,
power and harmony dominate the palate, combined with creamy fullness and density. A single vineyard Pinot
Grigio with a lot of character!
VINTAGE 2023
We are delighted with an interesting 2023 vintage! Even though we have experienced a
challenging growing season with alternating warm and cool periods with some rain, we
have had a fantastic harvest season with the best possible weather conditions for
ripening. After a midsummery June and July, followed by high rainfall at the
beginning of August, the grapes were able to benefit and ripen for a long time from
the optimal conditions with plenty of sunshine. Harvest began late in early September
with ideal weather conditions which were only replaced by more unstable weather
towards the end. Warm daytime temperatures and cool nights allowed the grapes to
reach optimum ripeness with balanced acidity levels and clear fruit, and good
structure.
VINIFICATION
Gentle pressing, followed by static clarification. A part ferments in stainless steel tanks
under controlled temperature (20°C). 20% of the must ferments in French oak barrels
and barriques (Allier) followed by partial malolactic fermentation. The blending occurs
shortly before bottling in springtime the following year.
Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio
Alcohol: 13,50% Vol
Residual sugar: 1,5 g/L
Total acidity: 5,8 g/L
Gewürztraminer Campaner...
Origin: the name Gewürztraminer goes back to Tramin, the neighbouring village of Kaltern, where this variety was first mentioned in documents in the 14th century.
Whether the variety really originated in Tramin is questionable. The fact is that it has a very long tradition in South Tyrol and produces excellent wines.

Vintage: the winter months were predominantly sunny but decidedly cold. Temperatures rose only hesitantly even in spring, slowing down the development phase of the
vines. However, a warm and sunny start to the summer made up for this. August and July were very varied, so the grape harvest started relatively late on 9 September. The
rainy September was a great organisational challenge for our winegrowers, but finally the harvest was completed on 26 October with a very good result.

Tasting notes:
- pale golden yellow
- intense nose, rose petals, lychee, cloves, cinnamon, some sage, complex and multilayered
- much volume on the palate, very clear and straightforward, tropical fruits in the long finish

Recommendation: goes very well with prawns and flavourful fish as well as with Asian cuisine. Also try it with thinly sliced pancetta!

Vinification: de-stemming of late harvested but perfectly healthy grapes; 12-hour cold maceration, pressing, natural must clarification, slow fermentation at a controlled
temperature of 18°C, ageing on fine lees for 5 months, filtration and bottling in March.

Vineyard: south-facing slope at 450 to 500m above sea level. Clayey marl on primary rock (porphyry, granite).

Grape variety(ies): Gewürztraminer
Age of the vines: 10 - 25 years
Drinking temperature: 11 - 13 °C
Yield: 40 hl/ha
Method of cultivation: wire frame
Alcohol: 14,5
Residual sugar: 6,5 g/l
Acidity: 5,2 g/l
Contains sulphites
Due to the warm
temperatures, bud break was very early and took place around April 20th. The summer
was characterized by warm and dry weather, fortunately without any extreme weather
events. The harvest began on September 7th, twenty days earlier than last year. During
harvest the weather was consistently good however, due to the earlier start date, it was
warmer than average. The harvest progressed very quickly and was already complete 20
days later. Due to the dry summer the grapes were very healthy with a fairly higher sugar
content.
2022 is again an excellent vintage for white wines. The very high-quality grapes lead to fullbodied
and structured wines. 2022 was also perfect for our red wines. They show
fruitiness, full-body structure with fine tannins.
