A powerful<br />and supple wine with still youthful tannins.<br /><br />Ageing potential: 8 - 10 years.<br /><br />Recommended food: its powerful body makes this wine a pleasant companion to dark meat, game, poultry and piquant hard cheeses.<br /><br />Serving temperature: 16° C.<br /><br />Grape variety: Lagrein; 15-year old trellis system<br /><br />Sites: the vines are planted in the classic growing area in Gries near Bolzano on deep, warm and sandy alluvial soils, granite and porphyry as the original rock; very<br />favourable microclimate in the Bolzano valley basin, very warm days, cooler nights.<br /><br />Yield: 49 hl/ha<br /><br />Vinification: Fermentation on the skins for 15 days, followed by gentle maceration.<br />Racking of the young wine into large wooden barrels for biological acid reduction. Subsequent ageing in small wooden barrels for 16 months; gentle coarse filtration before<br />bottling. Already on April 10, on the sunny sites<br />around the monastery, we saw the first shoots. Thanks to mild spring weather, there were<br />no problems with frost. During the summer the conditions were good as well, with normal<br />temperatures and average rainfall. There were no extreme weather event and so harvest<br />started about 10 days early on September 14th. Unfortunately, the autumn was a little bit<br />rainy and therefore the diurnal temperature shift was less extreme than usual. In order to<br />get healthy grapes, the harvest dates were brought forward and so harvest was already<br />completed by mid-October.<br />The wines of the 2020 vintage are delicate, fresh and fruity with moderate alcohol and an<br />appealing acidity. Similar to the 2019 vintage.<br />
