The historic vineyard is part of the monastery complex, where the vines stand on pure alluvial material from<br />the Talfer and a subsoil of Bolzano quartz porphyry. IN THE CELLAR<br />After fermentation and acid reduction in stainless steel, the wine is aged in new barrique barrels for 22 months, followed by harmonisation in enamelled steel tanks and<br />careful bottling after light filtration.<br />TASTING NOTES<br />The Klosteranger appears in deep garnet red and seduces with a bouquet of concentrated aromas. It is surprisingly lively and fruity on the nose with notes of coffee and<br />black berries as well as a hint of raspberries. On the palate, it convinces with grippy tannins, fresh acidity, delicate as well as elegant fullness and depth. At the time the market for Port was undergoing a profound change. Consumers were becoming more<br />knowledgeable and demanding in their choice of wine. No longer content with the simple young Ports that until then had accounted for much of consumption, they sought<br />more sophisticated and distinctive wines both to enjoy at home and when dining out.<br />

Classification<br />South Tyrol DOC<br /><br />Growing region<br /><br />The grapes for this wine come from our best and oldest vineyards in Mazon and Girlan. These vineyards are particularly suitable due to microclimatic conditions as well as<br />the age of the vines and have proven themselves over decades. The main part of the grapes comes from Mazon, where we find deep clay and limestone soils. The second<br />part comes from our oldest vineyards in Girlan, where we find a moraine deposit on volcanic porphyry rock.<br />Vinification and ageing<br /><br />The grapes are harvested by hand and delivered in small containers. The must - 10% of which is vinified as whole grapes - is then gravity-fed into steel vats where<br />fermentation takes place (20-24 days). After malolactic fermentation, the wine is matured for 12 months in barriques and small wooden barrels (12 hl). This is followed by 8<br />months of ageing in large wooden barrels (70 hl). BARTHENAU<br />VIGNA S. URBANO PINOT NOIR<br /><br />A Pinot Noir whose dark ruby-red colour already hints at its enormous concentration.<br />If the nose is still somewhat closed at first, it soon releases its aromas in the glass, which are reminiscent of the multi-faceted bouquet of classic Burgundies.<br />The enveloping scent of sour cherries and raspberries is underlined by delicate vanilla tones and fine spicy notes.<br />On the palate, it is very well balanced and convinces with its elegant acidity, well-integrated tannins and an impressively aromatic concentration.<br /><br />The Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano is an expression of our most valuable Cru site. Elena Walch's Pinot Noir 'Ludwig' was created with the 2001 vintage,<br />from grapes of old vines in cooler sites, some of which are even still planted as Pergel. The small production of 10,000 bottles indicates the strict selection of plots to<br />produce a classic, complex Burgundy of the highest quality.
