LAGREIN<br />RISERVA<br />South Tyrol - Alto Adige DOC<br />TABER<br />Lagrein, one of the most typical red wine varieties of South Tyrol and of the Cantina Bolzano, thrives in the valley floor around Bolzano at high temperatures differentiated<br />between day and night. SOUTH TIROL DOC<br />LAGREIN RISERVA<br />VINEYARD KLOSTERANGER<br /><br />Our historic single vineyard: expressive, concentrated and straightforward.<br />IN THE VINEYARD<br />This Lagrein thrives at an altitude of 280 m in the middle of Gries. The historic vineyard is part of the monastery complex, where the vines stand on pure alluvial material from<br />the Talfer and a subsoil of Bolzano quartz porphyry. IN THE CELLAR<br />After fermentation and acid reduction in stainless steel, the wine is aged in new barrique barrels for 22 months, followed by harmonisation in enamelled steel tanks and<br />careful bottling after light filtration.<br />TASTING NOTES<br />The Klosteranger appears in deep garnet red and seduces with a bouquet of concentrated aromas. It is surprisingly lively and fruity on the nose with notes of coffee and<br />black berries as well as a hint of raspberries. On the palate, it convinces with grippy tannins, fresh acidity, delicate as well as elegant fullness and depth. Our single-vineyard<br />Lagrein is wonderfully complex, long-lasting and pampers the palate with a multi-layered structure. Best enjoyed well-tempered with braised game dishes, tenderly roasted<br />beef or spicy cheese dishes. Optimal drinking pleasure within 10 years.Alcohol: 13.50 % vol. Description: Deep and concentrated fruit, aromas of blackcurrant, cocoa, cinnamon and vanilla as well as velvety tannins make up this full-bodied yet elegant cuvée.<br />Ageing potential: 10 - 15 years.<br />Recommended food: Meat dishes of all kinds, especially red meat and game dishes as well as mature cheese.<br />Serving temperature: 16° C.<br />Grape variety: 80% Merlot - 20% Cabernet. Older trellised vines (15 - 20 years), planting density 5,000 vines/ha.<br />Sites: vineyards at 250-430 m a.s.l., moraine rubble deposits and porphyry weathered soils, south-west facing.<br />Vinification: Must fermentation followed by maceration for 7-10 days, malolactic fermentation in barriques. In spring, first racking with assemblage of the two varieties and<br />further ageing for 14 months in small oak barrels. Gentle coarse filtration and filling. Grape variety: 100% Lagrein<br />Denomination of Origin: South Tyrol DOC<br />Altitude: 250 m above sea level<br />Area: the vineyards are located in Gries near Bolzano at 250 m above sea level. The sandy alluvial river soils in the closed heat-retaining Bolzano basin are characterised by<br />porphyry.<br />Climate: the Mediterranean climate is characterised by a lot of warmth from the south and very hot summers.<br />Vinification: the grapes of the GRIES Lagrein Riserva are harvested by hand. After destemming, the must ferments in steel tanks with gentle maceration. <br />Pratto<br /><br />Pratto represents a challenge that we wanted to take up, going beyond conventional schemes while maintaining unaltered respect for the territory. In this late harvest, the<br />aromaticity of Sauvignon vinified in stainless steel, the softness of Chardonnay and the finesse of Turbiana meet harmoniously with an exclusive result. The nose shows<br />notes of tropical fruit accompanied by a vegetality and minerality that enhance the finesse and elegance with a very communicative impact that induces salivation stimulating<br />the taste. On the palate it is rich with an exquisitely sweet attack followed by perfectly balanced acidity and flavour, and finally the fruity and mineral notes return. Chardonnay 'Cardellino' 2021 - South Tyrol DOC<br /><br />The Chardonnay 'Cardellino' was Elena Walch's first wine and is still probably the winery's most popular wine. According to an old tale, the goldfinch - the 'Cardellino' - only<br />builds its nest in Chardonnay vines, while it does not nest in other grape varieties. Elena Walch has thus dedicated her debut, an elegant Chardonnay full of character, to<br />this faithful little bird, which has won many lovers with its minerality, freshness, coupled with suppleness and excellent structure. The Chardonnay 'Cardellino' has long<br />since become a South Tyrolean classic and continues to be the most popular wine at the Walch family's table. A wine to which one remains loyal, just as the Cardellino<br />remains loyal to its Chardonnay.<br /><br />The Chardonnay 'Cardellino' convinces with a strong, straw-yellow colour, with a complex interplay of fruity aromas, citrus and orange peel, some lime blossom, mineral<br />richness and a spicy hint of tobacco. On the palate, this classic from Elena Walch surprises with exciting freshness and mineral race, with elegance and juicy length:<br />inviting, refreshing and easy to drink.<br /><br />OUTCOME OF THE YEAR 2021: we are delighted with a vintage of outstanding quality, especially for our white wines! A dry and cool spring led to a late flowering of the<br />vines, followed by a warm and dry June. After a volatile midsummer, there was a surprising change in the weather in mid-August, which brought dream weather until the end<br />of September and created the very best conditions for optimal ripening of the grapes. The harvest began in mid-September, about 10 days later than last year. Blue skies<br />and lots of sunshine as well as midsummer daytime temperatures and autumnally cool nights enabled the grapes to reach ideal sugar levels while retaining very good<br />acidity. Accordingly, the wines of the 2021 vintage show a markedly high quality.<br /><br />VINIFICATION: gentle pressing, static clarification, fermentation at a controlled temperature of about 20°C, long contact with the yeast after fermentation. Part of the must<br />(about 15%) is fermented in French oak barrels where it matures for six months.
